Recently I started watching Mind of a Chef on Netflix, and became immersed in the world of David Chang. I wanted to go to New York to eat my way through his food empire, which is why I was extremely delighted when I found out that he had planted roots in Toronto at the Shangri-La.
Originally I was only supposed to go upstairs to Daisho at a later day, but my friend and I had spare time. With an extra hour and a half to spare, we popped by Momofuku Noodle Bar.
I walked in and was amazed by the layout of the Momofuku restaurants. However I was in for a treat with their other items.
We decided to go with the staple Momofuku ramen, which was the make-or-break ramen for me. Either this was yet another blow to modern-esque Asian inspired food, or a springboard into the future. I am glad to say that it was the latter. It tasted like any good ramen, but it had the smokiness of the bacon-ends that I saw in Mind of a Chef.
The chashu pork was even more buttery in the way that it melted than other ramens. It was certainly different in taste, but definitely a more interesting take on chashu.
We also ordered some pork baos. Dang that belly melted once bitten, and was super tasty with the chilli sauce.
For drinks we ordered alcoholic slushies! One was the cherry blaster, while the other was citrus + raspberry. Both had some sake in them, and were super tasty.
For dessert, I walked out with the compost cookie, which was some kind of amazing. I had some graham crackers, chocolate, and a whole bunch of other awesomeness in there.
If you’re in Toronto, and looking for some fancy-shmancy and classy Asian-inspired food, Momofuku Noodle Bar is a great entry into David Chang’s food empire.
Cheers,
D
